Okay, so I’ve been eyeing this Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Mini-Bag for a while now. It’s just so classic and chic, you know? And I finally decided to go for it, to try and remake it myself. I mean, why not? I love a good DIY project, and this seemed like a fun challenge.
First things first, I needed to really study the bag. I spent hours looking at pictures online, especially from the official store. I noticed it’s named after the first Prada boutique that opened way back in 1913 in Milan. Cool, huh? It’s called the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Apparently, it’s the oldest active shopping place still going. That’s some history right there.
I started by making a pattern. This took forever, honestly. I used some cardboard and just kept sketching and cutting until I got the shape and size right. This bag is pretty structured, so I knew getting the dimensions perfect was super important. It has to stand upright and not get all floppy.
Next up, the material. The real bag is made from this Saffiano leather, which has a really distinct texture. I managed to find some leather that was pretty close, but getting that exact texture was tricky. I ended up playing around with a few different tools to try and recreate the cross-hatch pattern. It’s not perfect, but hey, it’s close enough.
Then came the sewing. This was the most time-consuming part. I had to be so careful to make sure all the seams were straight and neat. And let me tell you, working with leather is no joke! My fingers were sore for days. There were times I wanted to just throw the whole thing in the trash, but I kept pushing.
The handles were a whole other thing. I found this was a real pain in the neck. I made a prototype of these little rolled handles, but it took me several attempts to get them to look decent. Also, I have to mention that the original bag is so expensive that there’s a service to order it, for more than 5,000 dollars! Unbelievable. So, I think that for that price I should be able to make my own version, right?
Finally, after weeks of work, I finished it! It’s not an exact replica, obviously, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It definitely looks like a mini Galleria bag. I even added a little lining inside to make it more polished. It was a lot more work than I anticipated, but it was a fun learning experience.
And you know what? Now I have a cute new bag, and I made it myself! That’s pretty satisfying. I might even try and tackle another designer bag next. We’ll see!
