Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Rolex Submariner for a while now, you know, the two-tone black one, it just looks so slick. But man, those things are expensive! So, I started looking into these high imitation ones, and let me tell you, it’s a wild world out there.
First, I hit up some of those specialty stores that sell these high imitation watches. I walked in, and they had cases full of them. All kinds of Rolex models, not just the Submariner. I started checking them out, and honestly, some of them looked pretty darn convincing.
Here’s What I Did
-
Compared them side-by-side: I asked the store guy if I could see a few different ones next to each other. This helped me see the little differences in the finish, the weight, and the overall feel.
-
Looked at the details: I paid close attention to things like the bezel, the crown, the cyclops lens over the date, and the bracelet. These are areas where the high imitation ones sometimes mess up.
-
Checked the movement: Now, I’m no watch expert, but I know that real Rolexes have this smooth, sweeping second hand. It doesn’t tick like a cheap quartz watch. So, I watched that second hand like a hawk. Some of the high imitation ones had a pretty smooth sweep, but others were definitely ticking. I looked at the real Rolexes’s second hand movements and it is just smooth. I tried to look carefully about the second hand movements. Some are smooth but others are ticking.
After spending a good couple of hours in those stores, I realized that not all high imitation Rolexes are created equal. Some are way better than others. I compared and found out that the price also reflects the quality to some extent. And they told me that it is hard to tell the difference between a real Rolex and a fake one.
I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I am still thinking about this. I compared and tried them for a few days, but still not making the final decision. It’s a lot of money, even for a high imitation one. But man, they sure do look good. I might just have to treat myself. I need to keep doing my homework and make sure I’m getting a good one. And also need to consider whether I am a seasoned collector or a first-time buyer. It’s a tough call. It’s a big decision. I need to think about this more.
