Alright, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a YSL College bag for ages. But, you know, they’re pretty pricey. So, I thought, why not try to make one myself? It seemed like a fun project, plus I’d save a ton of money. I’m not a professional or anything, just a guy who likes to tinker with things, so bear with me.
First things first, I needed to figure out what I was dealing with. I spent a good chunk of time just staring at pictures of the bag online, trying to understand its structure, the materials, that sort of thing. The real ones are made with fancy leathers and metals, but I decided to go with more budget-friendly options. I hit up a local craft store and grabbed some faux leather that looked decent enough, and some metal hardware that seemed to match the style.
- Gathering Materials:
- Faux leather from a local craft store.
- Metal hardware (chain, buckle, logo) also from a local store.
- Strong thread.
- Lining fabric.
Next up, the pattern. This was a real headache. I couldn’t find any patterns for the YSL College bag online, obviously, so I had to make my own. I took some measurements from the pictures, sketched out some shapes on paper, and then cut them out. It took a few tries to get it right, making adjustments here and there until the pieces seemed to fit together like the real thing. I used tailor’s chalk to mark my faux leather and got down to cutting. I’ll admit, cutting faux leather is way harder than it looks. But I kept a steady hand and did the cutting.
Then came the sewing. I used my wife’s old sewing machine, which I’m pretty sure I’ve used more than she has. Sewing the pieces together was a slow process. I had to be careful to make sure everything lined up properly, and that the seams were strong enough to hold. I messed up a couple of times and had to redo some parts, but eventually, it started to look like a bag.
The Details
The tricky part was the details, like the YSL logo and the chain strap. For the logo, I found a similar-looking metal piece at the craft store and attached it to the front flap. It’s not the real deal, but it gives a similar vibe. The chain strap was easier. I just bought a length of chain and attached it to the sides of the bag with some metal rings. The YSL bags are known for the quality and materials, and though mine doesn’t really match up to that level, it still feels pretty sturdy.
After many hours of work, a lot of trial and error, and a few moments where I almost gave up, I finally finished my homemade YSL College bag. It’s definitely not perfect. There are some imperfections here and there, and it’s clearly not made with the same high-end materials as the original. But, you know what? I’m pretty proud of it. It’s unique, it’s mine, and it was a whole lot cheaper than buying the real thing. Plus, I learned a lot along the way. Now, I’m thinking, what bag should I try to remake next?
Would I recommend this to someone else? Maybe, if you’re really into DIY and have a lot of patience. It’s definitely a challenging project, but it’s also pretty rewarding. Just don’t expect to fool anyone into thinking it’s a real YSL. It is what it is – a handmade, budget-friendly version of a luxury bag. And sometimes, that’s even better.
